Sports massage was originally developed to enhance athletic performance and recovery from performance or athletic-related injuries. There are three contexts in which sports massage can be useful to an athlete: pre-event, post-event, and injury treatment.
Pre-event massage is delivered at the performance site, usually with the athlete fully clothed. Fast-paced and stimulating, it helps to establish blood flow and to warm up muscles. During the massage, the athlete generally focuses on visualizing the upcoming event. Post-event massage is also delivered on site, through the clothes. The intent here is to calm the nervous system and begin the process of flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. Post-event massage can reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training much sooner than rest alone would allow. When an athlete sustains an injury, skillful massage therapy can often speed and improve the quality of healing. Chinese Cupping combined with sports massage therapy is a very effective form of body work for the athlete.

Hot stone massage therapy melts away tension, eases muscle stiffness and increases circulation and metabolism. Each hot stone massage therapy session promotes deeper muscle relaxation through the placement of smooth, water-heated stones at key points on the body. Professional massage therapists also incorporate a customized massage, with the use of hot stones which offers enhanced benefits.
The premise behind hot stone massage therapy is that the direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist access to their deeper muscle layers. Combining hot stone protocols with a full body massage provides a very healing and effective experience. The hot stones also expand blood vessels, which encourages blood flow throughout the body. The hot stones have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation. Benefits of Hot Stone Therapy

To read Valerie’s blog ‘Simple Ways to Stay Healthy’ go to www.vallull.blogspot.com Recently, a client reported a trip to her doctor for pain in the bottom of her foot. She described it as feeling like her foot was ripping apart during the first few steps out of bed in the morning. During the day it seemed to get a bit better but never totally gone. She had a list of other symptoms and wanted to do whatever she could to get rid of the pain. Her doctor diagnosed her with Plantar Fasciitis and told her he could give her an injection. She cringed at the idea and decided to seek some alternative therapy for her pain. We decided to treat her bilaterally with leg and calf massage, pedi cupping, reflexology and making sure that all of her foot bones and muscles were addressed. After the treatment we discussed some homework options and she was happy to walk out of my office with a frozen golf ball. After that first treatment, she reported good improvement in both foot pain and leg muscle tightness. Both had decreased and she was able to get out of bed and walk almost normally. After a second treatment the following week she reported having no pain at all in her feet or legs. She was also able to walk normally in the morning and had no pain in her feet at the end of the day either. She was also excited to report that she could stand on her toes with no discomfort. I believe that since cupping is so effective at removing inflammation, that it was key in treating her Plantar Fasciitis. Historically Cupping on the feet has been a difficult prospect. But with the continued development of modern cupping equipment, negative pressure treatments on the feet has become a favorite throughout the health community and the public.
